The Scope of the Symposium:
Photo-induced water splitting using photosensitizers, such as semiconductors and metal complexes, 
has been a cutting-edge research area with growing expectations for the clean production of H2 from 
water by harvesting the abundant solar energy that reaches our planet. The ultimate goal of this 
research area is undoubtedly the realization of practically efficient H2 production technologies by 
combining photosensitizers, which absorb light covering a wide range of the solar spectrum, with 
effective catalysts capable of activating water molecules (reduction and/or oxidation). Although 
the chemistry of semiconductor materials and molecular catalysts have basically been developed in 
parallel with each other over many years, recent outstanding progress in both fields strongly 
encourages us to share the experience and knowledge of each area to stimulate activities that will 
move us a step closer to the ultimate goal. Indeed, research combining or linking these areas has 
become an attractive subject, and various artificial photosynthesis based on the hybrid system have 
already demonstrated in recent years. 
Thus, this session focuses on the recent progress in material developments for achieving efficient 
photo-induced water splitting, including semiconductor materials, semiconductor photoelectrodes, 
molecular photo-sensitizers, inorganic or molecular catalysts for activating water molecules.
